Wix vs WordPress: What Will You Still Have to Manage?

Wix vs WordPress for a small business comes down to the work you want the platform, your builder and your own team to carry after launch.

Wix combines its editor and hosting. Self-hosted WordPress separates the software from your host and gives you choices of themes and plugins. In either arrangement, somebody must carry the setup, content and connected customer work. WordPress.com belongs in the comparison too: it is a managed hosting service, not the same purchase as installing WordPress software with another host.

Compare one business, not two imaginary websites

Use a fictional local repair business with three services, genuine photographs, a short news section and estimate requests. The owner changes service wording occasionally; an office coordinator replies to inquiries. No online store, member area or custom application.

Price that same job on both sides. Ask each builder to show how you change a sentence, how the coordinator finds a request and who deals with a broken connection. This is a proposed demonstration script, not a hands-on test we have performed.

Who changes a service, replaces a photograph and checks the phone view? Demonstrate the exact editor and permissions you will use.

Hosting and upkeep

Wix supplies its hosting and software updates. For WordPress, identify the host and the actual maintenance agreement. WordPress.com offers managed hosting.

Inquiry handling

Who receives the request, can reply with its context and covers an absent colleague? A feature called Forms is only part of this job.

Recovery

Who can restore the site or repair a form? Specify what is included, what is extra and who has account access.

Moving later

What can be exported, what needs rebuilding and who controls the domain and original content?

Wix says it supplies hosting and performs software updates. You do not separately choose a server for an ordinary Wix site. That contained arrangement can be useful. You still need to check published information, permissions, contact routes and paid app subscriptions.

Wix Forms allows configured notification recipients and reply-to behaviour. Collaborators need appropriate inbox permissions. Show who replies when you are away. The fact that the site sends an email does not establish the coordinator can see or continue the request. Wix form-notification guidance

“WordPress” needs a second question

Are we discussing the open-source software from WordPress.org on a chosen host, or a WordPress.com subscription? The official documentation distinguishes them. WordPress.org and WordPress.com

With a self-hosted site, hosting, theme, forms and add-ons depend on the chosen setup. A managed host or maintenance provider may carry much of the technical work. Ask what that agreement includes, especially updates, recovery and checking that inquiries still arrive. WordPress.com supplies managed hosting. Its current paid plans all permit plugin installation, starting with Personal. An old comparison saying plugins require Business is now wrong. Compare renewal bills as well as the headline

WordPress software is free to obtain. Hosting, licences, setup and maintenance may not be. In the official US pricing view checked September 30, 2026, WordPress.com Personal was US$4 per month billed annually, or US$48 for the year, before tax. The monthly subscription was US$9 per month. Wix prices vary by billing country and term. Obtain the relevant Light, Core or other quoted plan in your billing country, including renewal terms. Do not quietly compare a promotional price in one country with an annual renewal in another. Wix pricing

Include the tools you must retain: business email, domain renewal, form or booking add-ons, paid plugins, support and any separate customer-record system. Ask what your staff time buys you on each side. There is no useful universal “WordPress costs X” number without that scope.

Moving the domain is not moving the whole site

WordPress offers more options for moving between hosts, but ask for a migration plan, not just an export button. For this repair business, my preference is a finished site your coordinator can use and you do not have to keep assembling. I have worked in software for over 16 years; choosing established technology for its job matters to me. So does making the business benefit understandable without asking you to become its technician.
