Squarespace vs WordPress for a service business comes down to whether you need a clear brochure with an inquiry form, or a site that must do substantially more connected work. Either way, somebody has to own what happens to the inquiry.
Both platforms require someone to shape the business explanation, prepare the customer path and keep it working. If you want a professional site taken care of, my recommendation is The Quiet Protocol’s Essential Website. The offer is $99/month for hosting and care, free design and build, for up to ten essential pages. Your ongoing care includes SSL and support with changes.
We create the distinctive design, write clear copy from your supplied business information, select suitable images and include the contact form and essential on-page search setup. You get a finished professional website and a team to contact for changes. You do not have to become the designer or find a separate person to look after it.
An empty spare room is useful. An entire unfinished wing can become a rather expensive place to store a vacuum cleaner.
A good brochure is a legitimate business tool
Imagine a fictional interior-design practice. Prospects need to see its work, understand project fit and request an initial conversation. Staff update photographs and service details. The first inquiry still needs human review; the website does not need to run the whole design project.
Squarespace includes hosting and page-building tools in its website subscription. Its current 7.1 templates share feature and style options, so the initial template is a starting point rather than a hard limit on the arrangement. That can be enough for this example, if the actual form and editing path work for the team. Squarespace getting started
Judge the finished explanation, rather than the amount of software behind it. A compact site still needs specific services, permitted photographs, clear boundaries and an honest next step.
For this practice, Essential is a strong fit when you can supply those facts and photographs. You review the finished preview and have a consolidated revision before approval. After launch, our team handles the website care and helps with changes. Your staff can spend their attention on the design projects rather than learning a second profession as website builder.
Which website are you actually commissioning?
- Brochure and inquiry
- Show services and work, explain fit, receive a request and pass it to a person. Demonstrate ordinary edits and the reply path. A contained platform may be enough.
- Connected service workflow
- Route inquiries by service, pass approved context into existing records, support several editors or meet a specific publishing requirement. Name each connection and the person who maintains it.
- Custom application
- Define what users must do, permissions, data and operational support. Neither platform's standard website subscription proves that this application is included.
The middle choice is not automatically WordPress. Squarespace has integrations too. Evaluate the particular connection and plan, rather than the label.
Check the form on the plan you will keep
Squarespace forms send submissions to an email address by default. That address can be the account email of the owner or contributor who added the form. Check it during handover, especially if a designer built the site. Current Core, Plus and Advanced plans support the form-block Mailchimp and Zapier integrations. Basic should not be quoted as including those connections. Squarespace form blocks
The inquiry must reach your team, with enough context to reply. A connection listed in a feature table does not prove its mapping or absence cover has been configured. Submit a labelled test, then ask the actual recipient to continue it. This is a proposed test, not a result we have measured.
There is a trial wrinkle worth catching: Squarespace says ordinary trial sites do not receive form-submission emails unless the owner is a Circle partner; another storage option is needed during that trial. Make the expected test environment explicit. Form-block trial and storage guidance
WordPress gives choices that somebody must look after
Self-hosted WordPress from WordPress.org lets you choose hosting, themes and plugins. The software being available does not establish that a particular form, booking connection or custom workflow is included. Hosting and maintenance depend on the chosen provider and agreement. Name the person who will maintain the connections. WordPress.org and WordPress.com distinction, WordPress maintenance guidance
WordPress.com is a different purchase: a hosted subscription. All of its current paid plans support plugin installation, so do not rely on an older comparison saying you need Business merely to install a plugin. Confirm compatibility, required hosting tools and the quoted tier. WordPress.com pricing, plugin policy
For the design practice, WordPress may be sensible if the team already knows its editor, has a capable maintainer or requires a particular content arrangement.
When the inquiry needs service-fit questions, connected records or a defined booking path, I recommend a Smart Website. Priced from $2,395 setup + $197/month, we add original positioning and conversion copy, custom design and the agreed connection to the next step. That work is valuable because the customer and the receiving team can continue the same conversation.
Put the right subscription in the quote
Squarespace's current individual website plans are Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced. Acuity Scheduling, Email Campaigns, domains and Google Workspace are separate services with their own subscriptions. An included first-year domain offer does not make renewal free. Legacy accounts can have different plans. Squarespace plan guidance
The official Canadian pricing offers checked September 30, 2026 listed Basic at CA$252 annually, equivalent to CA$21 per month, or CA$30 on monthly billing. Core was CA$384 annually, equivalent to CA$32 per month, or CA$45 monthly. These are website subscriptions, not a complete project quote. Confirm applicable tax, renewal and the plans available in your billing country; US prices are a different local offer. Squarespace pricing
Compare a complete annual scope in the same currency: website or hosting, required integrations, licences, domain renewal, email, writing, maintenance and staff training. For self-hosted WordPress obtain the actual host and maintainer quote. For WordPress.com use the relevant local subscription and plugin costs. A bare free-software figure is not equivalent to Squarespace's hosted plan.
Leaving either platform still requires a plan
Squarespace's XML export carries selected content to WordPress. It does not export the styling, custom CSS or every content type. Portfolio pages are among the exclusions. For a design practice, that is a material limitation, not a footnote. Squarespace export scope
WordPress.com's ordinary XML export is also a content export, not a complete copy of the design, plugins and media. Ask how the actual site would move, including photographs, URLs and inquiry handling. WordPress.com export scope
Choose a finished arrangement that fits the present job. For the professional site, I recommend Essential: let an agency build it with free setup and stay to take care of it. For custom positioning and a deliberate route from service page to inquiry or booking, choose a Smart Website.
Bring us your project-fit questions and the examples you can publish. We will make the service easier to choose, and take care of the website work around it.
Frequently asked questions
How should a service business compare Squarespace and WordPress?
Start with the website and customer path it needs, then compare the actual plans, editing responsibilities and upkeep. A platform that suits the design still needs a dependable form or booking destination.
Does a good brochure site have a useful role?
Yes. A clear business explanation can be valuable. When the team also needs qualification, appointments or follow-up, buy the receiving system as part of the decision rather than expecting presentation alone to carry it.
What is the TQP alternative to managing a website builder?
Choose a done-for-you website with clear implementation and care responsibility. TQP can add the intake and booking path the business needs, so you buy a working customer route rather than another design tool to learn.
Essential gives your firm an agency-designed website with free setup and monthly hosting and care. We write and build it from your information, then remain available for support with changes.
