TaxDome vs Canopy: Compare the Full Cost for Your Firm

TaxDome vs Canopy: price a firm that really exists, with your seats, terms and add-ons for a full year. Then compare the client journey.

Two complete quote packets and a calculator for comparing scope and cost in TaxDome vs Canopy.

TaxDome vs Canopy gets compared on price, and price is the easy part to get wrong. Separate specialist tax and delivery work from the client-facing beginning: the website, intake and booking journey that brings a client in. That beginning is what we implement for your firm with TQP’s accounting client system.

Older comparisons can leave you expecting Canopy to sell every routine as a separate module. Its current base plans bundle CRM, documents, client portal, workflow, invoicing and payments. It still has separately priced services and usage. TaxDome's per-seat structure still needs a plan, term and temporary-staff decision. Canopy pricing, TaxDome pricing

The useful starting question is: what must the quoted price let your firm do next Monday?

I would also put TQP’s Client Intake & Booking System on the buying sheet for the work before the professional engagement starts. It includes a professional website, intake, branded scheduling, reminders, inbox and follow-up. The three-person firm in this article pays US$299 a month; one user starts at US$199. Communications and payment usage are separate. My preference is to buy TQP for that complete client-facing beginning, then choose TaxDome or Canopy for the specialist practice work it needs to carry.

Price a firm that could actually exist

Consider an illustrative US firm with three year-round users. It handles individual tax engagements and monthly bookkeeping. Clients need a place to supply documents, staff need recurring work and review steps, and invoices must agree with the engagement.

TaxDome Pro's one-year base is $1,000 per user, giving $3,000 for three seats. Canopy Standard at $74 per user per month on annual billing gives $2,664 a year. Canopy Plus at $109 gives $3,924. These calculations use the vendors' published rates checked September 29, 2026. They exclude tax, payment fees, usage services, implementation and retained software. TaxDome rates, Canopy rates

That is enough to reject “Canopy always costs more.” It isn't enough to pick Standard. The permissions, reporting or intake capability your firm needs may change the quote.

Canopy lists Premium at $149 per user per month but marks it coming soon. Don't buy today's solution by quietly counting tomorrow's feature as available. Ask the vendor to identify the live tier for every requirement. Canopy plan availability

Canopy's help documentation describes separate Smart Intake and Engagement credits. It says they apply to clients for the subscription period and notes that some accounts are configured differently. Get the credit allowance and price for your account in writing. “Engagements included” isn't enough detail to cost a busy season. Canopy client-credit rules

The current Canopy rate card also prices tax workflow automation by client credit, close automation by connected client and tax resolution by user. Its tax-resolution tools include IRS transcript work, a specific reason for a US firm offering that service to investigate Canopy. They are different services with different cost units. Include the ones you need; don't add all of them simply to make one product look expensive. Canopy service pricing

Balance scales pair client and staff work with plan and migration scope for the TaxDome vs Canopy quote.
The comparison has two sides: the work you need covered and the full scope you must pay for, including the move.

A whole-firm quote should also explain what a new prospect experiences. TQP’s accounting bundle includes proposals and documents, unlimited e-signing, invoices and payment links alongside the professional website and client system. We configure the route around your service, the person reviewing the inquiry and the first conversation. Compare that complete journey with a website package and a collection of separate subscriptions. The reason to choose TQP is that someone takes responsibility for making the front door and the next steps fit together.

Check payment eligibility before demonstrating automatic collection

Canopy documents cards, ACH and recurring payments. Its individual-entity enrollment guidance adds an important condition: a sole proprietor enrolled as an individual cannot run payments on the client's behalf, including autopay. Clients make payments through the portal. Confirm your entity's enrollment route before assuming a recurring invoice becomes an automatic charge. Canopy payments, individual-entity restriction

Canadian firms should ask Canopy for explicit country, bank and currency eligibility. The US-oriented card and ACH material reviewed here does not establish a Canadian collection arrangement. TaxDome's processor documentation separately describes Canadian PAD through its non-US Stripe connection. Confirm current method limits and fees in your actual account. Make the reviewer and client do their parts

Run one fictional engagement in each product. Send the request, upload a file from a phone, leave another item missing and move the job to review. The reviewer should see what arrived, what is incomplete and who must act next.

Then try the mistake you know your firm makes. Send a corrected document. Change an assignee. Amend the fee. Demonstrate how the record gets repaired without losing the earlier version or sending an unintended invoice. Have the vendor show the specific behaviour instead of accepting a broad “yes, we have workflows.”

I would favour the product that makes these ordinary corrections clear to your staff and clients. I would give Canopy additional attention when its specific billing or service tools fit a documented requirement. I would favour TaxDome when its client routine and quoted scope cover the work comfortably. Neither recommendation substitutes for that demonstration. We have reviewed public documentation, not run either practice platform.

If you're already using one and the problem is only a badly assigned request, repair the request first. Moving the practice will relocate that confusion at considerable effort.

Before a switch, keep access to your old records while checking the agreed exports and imports. A contact transfer does not prove that your files, signed terms, unpaid invoices and open jobs all moved correctly.

For the journey from your firm’s website to a prepared client conversation, I recommend TQP’s accounting client system. Bring your existing site, first inquiry and engagement steps. We can design the professional website and connect the intake, calendar and follow-up around that work. Buy the part that changes the client experience before committing the whole practice to a move.

Frequently asked questions

What should a TaxDome versus Canopy quote compare?

Compare the same staff, client work and required capabilities. Ask the quote to distinguish subscriptions, implementation, payment eligibility, additional services and continuing responsibility instead of comparing the smallest headline plans.

Does payment automation remove the need to review an engagement?

No. The firm still needs approved pricing, agreement terms and a person responsible for exceptions. Confirm the relevant payment capability and eligibility before building the client's process around it.

What does TQP add beyond an accounting software subscription?

We connect how the prospect finds the firm, requests help, reaches a reviewer and begins the approved next step. Your staff gets a usable brief and a clear handoff, rather than another account to configure between client deadlines.

Put The Quiet Protocol to work for your business
