# Google Local Services Ads for HVAC, Plumbing and Roofing: Lead Costs and Missed Calls

How Google Local Services Ads work for HVAC, plumbing and roofing: what counts as a charged lead, what leads cost and how missed calls can hurt your ranking.

![Four steps of a paid Local Services Ads lead: a customer contacts you, Google charges a lead even for a voicemail, someone answers or the miss can hurt ranking, and the job is booked.](https://www.thequietprotocol.com/images/editorial/google-local-services-ads-home-service-companies-guide-cover.webp)

Local Services Ads are the boxes at the very top of Google when someone searches for a plumber, an HVAC company or a roofer. They look different from regular search ads, and they work differently. You do not pay when someone clicks. You pay when a customer contacts you.

That one difference changes how a home service company should think about them. If you pay for a lead, the question is no longer how many people clicked. It is how many of the people you paid for did you actually answer, book and serve.

This guide explains how the ads work, using Google's own help pages, what leads typically cost by trade, and why answering every call matters more than most owners realize.

**The short answer** You do not pay for clicks. You pay when a customer contacts you, and a voicemail counts. If nobody answers, you have paid for a lead a competitor may now serve, and Google says missed calls can hurt your ranking. Count your charged leads against your answered calls first.

## How Local Services Ads work

Local Services Ads sit above the usual search results and the map. A customer sees a company name, a star rating, the number of reviews, and a button to call or message. Google's help page says that with Local Services Ads you only pay for leads related to your business or the services you offer. They are available for eligible service categories in the United States and Canada. Check Google's current list for your trade and area, because eligibility changes by location and category.

## What counts as a charged lead

Google's help page lists what it considers a charged lead:

- A text message or email from the customer
- A voicemail from the customer, or the customer using an automated system to meaningfully engage
- A phone call that you answer and speak with the customer
- A missed call without a voicemail, where you return the customer's message
- A booking request (available in the United States and Canada)

Leads are not credited if the customer asked for free advice, researched pricing, canceled a booking or did not respond to your follow-up.

Read that list again from an owner's point of view. A voicemail is a charged lead. A customer who calls, hears nothing and hangs up is not, but the customer who leaves a voicemail at 11 p.m. is, and nobody called back until nine the next morning. You may have paid for a lead the customer has already given to a competitor.

## What a lead costs

Google says lead prices "may vary depending on your location, the job type, the type of lead, or your bidding mode," and that message leads typically cost less than phone leads. Google does not publish a price list by trade. Agency studies fill the gap, and they are estimates, not guarantees:

| Trade | Reported range | Source |
| --- | --- | --- |
| HVAC | $30 to $60 per lead | [StackMatix, home services Local Services Ads](https://www.stackmatix.com/blog/home-services-google-local-services-ads) (September 2026) |
| HVAC | $51 per lead in one 2026 benchmark | [Webtonic, HVAC Google Ads statistics](https://www.webtonic.io/blog/hvac-google-ads-statistics) |
| Plumbing | $25 to $50 per lead | [StackMatix](https://www.stackmatix.com/blog/home-services-google-local-services-ads) |
| Roofing | $40 to $75 per lead | [StackMatix](https://www.stackmatix.com/blog/home-services-google-local-services-ads) |

Treat these as ballparks, since other studies report higher figures in some markets. Your market, season and bidding choices will move them. The point is not the exact figure. It is that every lead has a price, so every missed or slow response has one too.

## Why missed calls cost more than the lead

Google's help page on ad rankings says that ranking depends on your bid and the overall quality of your profile. It lists responsiveness as a factor and states plainly: "Missed calls may negatively affect your responsiveness." It adds that your rating, number of reviews, average response time, use of high-quality images and the verification checks you have completed all factor into profile quality, and that "higher quality profiles, including those with images, may rank higher and may also pay lower costs per lead." See [Google's page on ad rankings](https://support.google.com/localservices/answer/7527305).

So a missed call can hurt you twice. The customer goes elsewhere, and the miss can lower how often your ad appears and raise what you pay for the next lead.

## Five things to do this month

**1. Count your charged leads and your answered calls.** Your Local Services account lists leads. Your phone records list calls. Put the two side by side for the last 30 days. The gap is your first number.

**2. Cover the hours your phone is not staffed.** Evenings, weekends and any time your crew is on a job. A human answering service or an AI voice agent will do. The goal is that no lead goes quiet.

**3. Pick one person to own the lead list every day.** Someone who reviews yesterday's leads, calls back anyone missed and flags the ones that look wrong.

**4. Track which leads become jobs.** Write down the outcome of every lead for a month: booked, quoted, not a fit, no answer. That gives you a real cost per booked job, which is the number that matters.

**5. Improve the profile that Google is judging.** Reviews, photos, an accurate service area and hours. This is the same work that supports your regular Google Maps listing, and it helps both.

## A worked example, with assumptions stated

This is an illustration, not a forecast. Suppose an HVAC company pays $51 per lead (the reported average above), gets 60 leads a month and answers 48 of them. Twelve go unanswered or reach voicemail with no callback. If a booked job is worth $450 and about 40 percent of answered leads book, the 48 answered leads produce around 19 jobs. If even half of the 12 missed leads would have booked at the same rate, that is another two or three jobs, around $900 to $1,350 a month, from leads already paid for. Swap in your own numbers.

## Where an AI voice agent fits

An AI voice agent will not run your ads and it does not change your ranking by itself. What it does is answer the calls your ads produce at any hour, ask the questions your team needs, book the visit and text you the details. The Quiet Protocol's [AI voice agents](https://www.thequietprotocol.com/solutions/ai-receptionist) are from $449/month, free setup, no contract, with minutes of calls included in the plan. We do not manage ad accounts, and we say so up front.

## Questions owners ask

**Are Local Services Ads worth it?** It depends on your lead cost, your close rate and your average job. Track booked jobs, not leads, for a few months before you decide.

**Can I get a refund for a bad lead?** Google credits some charged leads automatically in the United States and Canada, and you can report poor-quality leads. See [Google's help page](https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/7195435) for what qualifies. Credits are not guaranteed.

**Do I need Local Services Ads if I have a Google Business Profile?** They are separate. A profile is free and helps you show up in the map. Local Services Ads are paid and appear above it. Many companies use both.

**Does this apply in Canada?** Local Services Ads are available in Canada for eligible categories, and booking requests are available in the United States and Canada. Prices on this page are in US dollars.
