# Answering Service for Contractors: What It Costs Per Minute, Per Call or Flat

Answering service pricing for contractors: per minute, per call or flat. See the real monthly bill for the same 120 calls across seven published plans.

![Seven horizontal bars of different lengths with prices from $79 to $1,725 beside the headline: same 120 calls, seven very different bills.](https://www.thequietprotocol.com/images/editorial/answering-service-for-contractors-what-it-costs-per-minute-call-or-flat-cover.webp)

An answering service for contractors costs anywhere from under $100 a month to well over $1,000, for the same 120 calls. The gap is not quality alone. It is how each service counts: by the minute, by the call, by the unique customer, or as a flat plan with minutes included. Choose a model that matches the way your phone rings, and the bill makes sense.

We sell an AI voice agent, so we are not neutral. We read each service's own pricing page on October 11, 2026 and show you the arithmetic, including where we cost more than the cheapest option.

**The short answer** Count your calls and minutes for a month, then price them under each model. For 120 calls averaging 2.5 minutes, the published plans we checked came to between $79 and $1,725 a month. AI-only tools cost the least. Live human services cost the most. Our Essential plan costs more than the AI-only tools and includes a customer system and website. Price is half the decision. The other half is what the service does on a no-heat call at 10 p.m.

## Four ways a service counts your calls

- **Per minute.** Ruby, Abby Connect and Rosie sell plans with a set number of minutes. A long call uses more of your allowance. Abby Connect counts a minute of AI answering as half a minute of its plan.
- **Per call.** Smith.ai and Upfirst include a set number of calls, then charge for each extra one. Smith.ai lists $11.50 for each call over 30 on its Starter plan.
- **Per unique customer.** Goodcall counts the number of different customers who call, not the number of calls, so a repeat caller should not be counted twice. Check how it defines a unique customer.
- **Flat with minutes included.** Our plans work this way. You pay one monthly price that includes a stated number of minutes, and a top-up pack covers a busy month.

None of these is better in every case. Per call suits a business with short calls. Per minute suits a business with chatty callers if the allowance is big enough. The danger in every model is the same: the month you outgrow the plan.

## The same month, seven bills

Here is one illustrative contractor: 120 calls a month averaging 2.5 minutes, which is 300 minutes. That is our assumption. Yours may be 40 calls or 400, so count a real month from your phone's call log and swap it in.

![Seven bars of monthly cost for 120 calls averaging 2.5 minutes. Goodcall Starter $79, Upfirst 90-call plan with 30 extra calls $89.95, Rosie Scale $149, the Essential AI voice agent plan, Smith.ai Basic with 30 extra calls $1,125, Abby Connect 500-minute plan $1,380 and Ruby 500-minute plan $1,725. AI-only tools are shown in brass, live services in green and our plan in red.](https://www.thequietprotocol.com/images/editorial/answering-service-for-contractors-what-it-costs-per-minute-call-or-flat-bills.svg)

Illustration: 120 calls, 300 minutes. Plans are the smallest published plan that fits, with published overage where listed. Prices read October 11, 2026.

| Service | How it counts | Plan that fits 120 calls | Monthly |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Goodcall | Unique customers | Starter, about 150 calls | $79 |
| Upfirst | Calls | 90 calls plus 30 extra at $1 | $89.95 |
| Rosie | Minutes | Scale, 1,000 minutes | $149 |
| Our Essential plan | Minutes | 600 minutes included | $449/month with 600 minutes of calls, free setup, no contract |
| Smith.ai | Calls | Basic, 90 calls plus 30 extra at $10.50 | $1,125 |
| Abby Connect | Minutes | 500 minutes | $1,380 |
| Ruby | Minutes | 500 minutes | $1,725 |

For Ruby and Abby Connect we picked the smallest plan that covers 300 minutes, because we did not find a published overage rate for the 200-minute plan. A cheaper plan with overage may cost less than the table shows. Ask.

Now run a storm week. If your calls double to 240, the Smith.ai math changes: its Basic plan plus 150 extra calls costs more than its $2,100 Pro plan, so you would move up. A flat plan with included minutes behaves differently. At 2.5 minutes a call, 240 calls is about 600 minutes, which is what our Essential plan includes.

## Why the cheap bills are not the same product

The cheapest bars are AI-only tools sold mainly on the call itself. The expensive bars are live receptionists trained to your script. Our price sits between them because it includes the system around the call. What you are really comparing is what happens after the phone stops ringing.

For a contractor, a good answering service does four things on every call:

1. **Sorts the call.** Emergency now, same day, scheduled or not a fit. A burst pipe and a gutter quote are different calls.
2. **Captures what you need to dispatch.** Name, address, the problem and the best number, and whether anyone is in danger.
3. **Books or alerts.** A visit on your calendar for routine work, an alert to your on-call phone for an emergency.
4. **Tells you what happened.** A text to the caller, and a summary to you while you are still on the job.

Check the plan against those four. Many cheap plans take a message. That is useful, but you are still the dispatcher.

## Ten questions to ask before you sign

1. What counts toward my limit: minutes, calls or unique customers? Do spam calls count?
2. What happens when I go over, and what is the rate?
3. What does a storm week or a heat wave cost me?
4. Who gets an emergency call, by what channel, and what if they do not answer?
5. Does it book onto my calendar, or only take a message?
6. Do I get a text to the caller and a summary to me?
7. Can I keep my number, and what happens to it if I leave?
8. What is the contract, the setup fee and the cancellation rule?
9. Does it answer in Spanish when the caller needs it?
10. Who changes the script when my services or my hours change, and how fast?

Then call the service yourself and say your basement is flooding. Interrupt it. Ask for a person. Ten minutes beats any feature page.

## Which fits your phone

### A live service fits if

- Your callers are anxious or complicated.
- You want a trained person for sensitive calls.
- You can afford the higher bill and a plan with room.

### An AI voice agent fits if

- You miss calls on the job and after hours.
- You want the visit booked and the summary texted.
- You want the bill to stay predictable.

Many contractors use both: AI first, a person for the calls that need one. Our [HVAC](https://www.thequietprotocol.com/blog/hvac-answering-service-vs-ai-voice-agent) and [plumbing](https://www.thequietprotocol.com/blog/plumber-answering-service-what-to-ask-and-script) guides go deeper on those trades, and our [after-hours test](https://www.thequietprotocol.com/blog/call-your-own-business-after-hours-test) shows you how to find out what your callers hear tonight.

## Where our plan fits

Our Essential AI voice agent plan is $449/month with 600 minutes of calls, free setup, no contract. It answers 24/7 in English, Spanish or French, asks your questions, books the visit, texts you the summary, sends real emergencies to your on-call phone and texts back callers you miss. A 300-minute top-up pack is available for a busy month. Your plan also includes a customer system with a job pipeline, one inbox for texts and email, a booking calendar, a website of up to ten pages and a phone app for quotes, payments and review requests.

We are not the cheapest bar on the chart, and we do not claim to be. The AI-only tools cost less because they sell the call alone. We charge for the call, the booking, the follow-up and a team that sets it up for you.

## Do this before you buy anything

1. **Pull last month's call log.** Count calls, add up minutes, and note your busiest week.
2. **Price three plans.** One per minute, one per call, one flat. Use the real numbers, including a busy week.
3. **Write your call card.** Four lanes: emergency now, same day, scheduled, not a fit.
4. **Test each service.** Call it after hours with an emergency and a booking request.
5. **Check the exit.** Cancellation, number ownership and what you keep.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does an answering service cost for a contractor?

Published plans we checked on October 11, 2026 came to between $79 and $1,725 a month for 120 calls averaging 2.5 minutes. AI-only tools were the least expensive, live human services the most. Your bill depends on your call volume and on whether the service counts minutes, calls or unique customers.

### Is an answering service cheaper per minute or per call?

It depends on your calls. Per call suits short calls. Per minute suits a plan with a generous allowance. Count a month of your own calls and minutes, then price both. The risk in either model is the month you go over, so ask for the overage rate.

### Is an AI answering service good enough for contractor emergencies?

It can be, if it sorts the call, captures the address and problem and alerts your on-call phone. Test it with a real emergency call before you rely on it, and keep a person in the loop for calls that need judgment.

*Prices for other services come from their public pricing pages, read on October 11, 2026, and they change. We are not affiliated with any service named here. The 120 calls and 2.5 minutes are an illustration, not a measured average, and we picked the smallest published plan that fits. Check each service's current terms.*
